Fin whale in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History

On Thursday, 15th September 2011, Morigenos team attended the official opening of the exhibition titled "The mysterious death of young Leonora", where a skeleton of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was displayed. In spring 2003, a dead female fin whale was found floating in Piran Bay. The skeleton was acquired by the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. Their experts turned 10 tonnes of decomposing carcass into a beautiful white skeleton that is now displayed in one of the museum's halls. This is the largest exhibit ever acquired by this museum in its 190 years of history. It was given a name Leonora.

The exhibition, with its video footage, audio effects, interactive presentations, diverse images and interesting texts, takes the visitors through marine depths, where they can learn all about who Leonora was, where she came from, who are her relatives and what were her life habits. Even though the cause of death of young Leonora remains a mystery, the exhibition draws attention to the threats affecting whales and are mostly caused by human activities.

We are proud to invite you to have a look, because Morigenos had an important role in the making of the exhibition. We contributed several photographs and provided information, while Morigenos president Tilen Genov is one of the authors of the new educational booklet "Fin whale in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History".

The exhibition will be open from 16th September 2011 to 16th of September 2012, every day between 10:00 and 18:00, during Tuesdays also untill 20:00. Each first Sunday of the month the entry is free.

Brazdasti kit v Prirodoslovnem muzeju Slovenije

Common dolphin – an uncommon visitor in the Gulf of Trieste

Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) in the Gulf of Trieste. Photo: Tilen Genov, Morigenos

There is an unusual visitor present in the Gulf of Trieste in the past year. It is a short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) that Morigenos researchers and biologists from Miramare Marine Protected Area have been monitoring for over a year. It is a species that was once common in the Adriatic, but has become very rare in the last 30 years - it is now considered regionally extinct in the Adriatic Sea.

In June 2010 our colleagues from Miramare informed us about two dolphins of unknown species that were spotted close to the port of Monfalcone several days in a row. We immediately headed out to sea in order to check it out. We found two dolphins, a mother and a calf, inside the port itself. We soon determined that they were short-beaked common dolphins. We photographed the animals for individual identification, assessed their condition and observed their behaviour. The female appeared healthy, but the calf showed signs of poor health. We sent the dorsal fin photographs of the female to our colleagues from Tethys Research Institute in Greece and discovered that she had been encountered there before. This means she travelled at least 1000 km, which is the longest recorded movement of this species, worldwide. We presented this information at one of this year's marine mammal conferences. The mother and calf stayed in the port until February 2011. After this, the calf disappeared and the female moved out of the port soon afterwards. Since then we have been seeing her occasionally in various other locations in the Gulf of Trieste. She looks healthy and often very playful. The most important thing for her now is that people do not harass her or attempt any close contact with her. Wild animals should remain wild. If this dolphin becomes a so called »solitary sociable dolphin« and starts seeking human company, that could in the long term prove to be dangerous not only for her, but also for the people.

The short-beaked common dolphin used to be one of the most widespread and abundant dolphin species in the Mediterranean. Today the Mediterranean population is classified as endangered. Common dolphins have become very rare in the eastern and in several parts of the western Mediterranean. Why this particular female swam all this way and stayed here remains a mystery.

Navadni delfin – nenavadni obiskovalec v Tržaškem zalivu

Na fotografiji: Navadni delfin (Delphinus delphis) v Tržaškem zalivu. Foto: Tilen Genov, Morigenos

Če ta delfinka slučajno postane t.i.

krivnost.

Whale in Kvarner

A whale was sighted close to Rijeka yesterday. It was probably a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), based on photos, video footage and the fact that this species is present in the Mediterranean Sea. Nevertheless, the possibility of another species is not excluded. In the second half of June, a whale of similar size was also reported off Poreč. Fin whales are common in the Mediterranean and are the only species of baleen whales that are constantly present in this region. Therefore the occurrence of fin whales in the Adriatic is not unusual and we normally record this species almost every year. The last sighting in the Gulf of Trieste was in the end of year 2009. It is very important that we leave such animals in peace and do not try to "help" them or drive them out to open sea. Whales usually find their way in water just fine. However, if something is indeed wrong with them, then additional disturbance is definitely not helpful. If you happen to encounter a whale off Slovenia, please let us know by calling +386 31 77 10 77 or sending an e-mail to morigenos@morigenos.org. Photos or video footage is also very helpful.

Kit v Kvarnerju

Morigenos members and dolphin adopters day

Last Saturday, May 7th 2011, we organized a special day for Morigenos members and dolphin adopters. We demonstrated our research procedures, informed them about the latest news of “your and our” dolphins and we all got to know eachother better. Unfortunately we missed dolphins only for one day. We found a dolphin on Sunday morning, swimming next to the oceanographic buoy, exactly where we were sailing the day before. Later on, in the afternoon, we also tracked down a group of 15 dolphins further offshore. Among them we saw Deinon, Amanita, Kai and Daphne with her new calf. Even though we didn’t find any dolphins during our day together, we all spent a nice sunny day in Piran. Thank you for joining us.

On the link below (minute 10:40) you can check out the short news broadcast during the morning TV show Dobro Jutro (in Slovene)

This year's first turtle!

We were out at sea two days ago. During dolphin search we encountered our first loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) this year. The carapace lenght was about 40-50 cm. The turtle was basking calmly at the surface. Marine turtles visit our waters each year between May and October. We look forward to the new turtle season and to new encounters with these silent sailors.

Daphne has a new baby!

We headed out to sea a few days ago. Finally some good weather for fieldwork. After less than 10 minutes on navigation, something jumped out of the water and made a splash, far away on the horizon. We directed the boat there. It may just be tuna fish. That would be a nice sighting, too. Nevertheless, we were silently hoping it would be dolphins. Another dark figure on the horizon. It is amazing how your heart starts beating faster with tense anticipation, while all you see around is calm water and the boat glides peacefully accross it. In the next moment, all doubts were gone: dolphins! We gradually reduced speed and slowly approached the group from the side. Deinon! Amanita! Old friends everywhere. Soon we spotted a tiny creature, swimming beside its mother. Definitely a newborn, perhaps only a week or two old. At first we did not see who the mother was. And then the revelation: Daphne! New calves are always good news. But with Daphne (one of our most frequently encountered dolphins) being the mother, the news are even better. Emanuela is also here with her 1 year old calf that we met last year as a newborn. The fact that the calf survived its first year is very encouraging. We hope Daphne can achieve the same with her calf. Many newborns do not survive through their first year of life. But if her best friend succeeded, we believe Daphne can do it as well.

Morda so le tune. Novi mladički so vedno dobra novica.

Real Way Down

Ekipa društva Morigenos v svoji raziskovalni bazi v Luciji trenutno gosti mednarodno ekipo dveh Angležev in ene Belgijke. Trije popotniki tvorijo ekipo (ki jo sestavljajo projektni vodja Matt Sarson, novinarka Cindy Cao in snemalec Phil Wright) inovativnega dobrodelnega projekta »The Real Way Down« - 22 tednov dolge ekspedicije iz Londona do Cape Towna. Ekipa bo na poti obiskala različne dobrodelne organizacije v vsaki izmed 22-ih držav na poti.

»The Real Way Down« je projekt nove nevladne organizacije »Patchwork World«.

Real Way Down

The Morigenos team is currently hosting an international team of two Brits and one Belgian in Morigenos field base this week. The three travellers make up the team (consisting of project manager Matt Sarson, journalist Cindy Cao and videographer Phil Wright) behind the innovative charity project 'The Real Way Down' - a 22 week long car expedition from London to Cape Town, visiting a different charity or NGO in each of the 22 countries on the way.

The 'Real Way Down' is a project from a new development NGO 'Patchwork World'. Filming the entire journey, the project will help to promote each of their partner charities, as well as encouraging increased cooperation between national and local charities on an international level, connecting people through shared passions and problems. The project will explore the existence of hope and positive progression within the charity sector, and explore methods of developing and increasing the efficiency of the sector as a whole.

The 22 charities visited during the 'Real Way Down' will form the foundations of the'Patchwork World' network, which will be developed over the coming years, helping to connect people working towards a better and fairer world.

In Slovenia, the team have chosen to work with Morigenos, and have spent the last five days with us at our base in Lucija and out in the field, in order to understand more about marine biology and conservation. The team will produce a short documentary about the work of Morigenos to be broadcast on TV in the UK and around the world via the internet. We were very happy and honoured to host such an amazing team of very positive, kind and fun people. We wish them a safe and exciting journey and we hope to have them back with us soon!

Conference of the European Cetacean Society

Morigenos team attended the 25th Conference of the European Cetacean Society in Cadiz (Spain), from 21st to 23rd March 2011. The theme of this year's conference was »Long-term datasets on marine mammals: learning from the past to manage the future".
Tilen Genov presented some of the latest findings, made in cooperation with our Italian colleagues, on short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) in the central Mediterranean Sea with the title: »Long-distance (1000+km) movement by a short-beaked common dolphin in the central Mediterranean Sea«.

Tilen Genov je predstavil izsledke zadnjih raziskav, opravljenih v sodelovanju z italijanskimi kolegi, o navadnem delfinu (Delphinus delphis) v osrednjem delu Sredozemskega morja z naslovom: »Dolga migracija (1000+km) navadnega delfina v osrednjem delu Sredozemskega morja«.

Happy birthday Tethys!

Happy birthday to Tethys, our fellow NGO! Tethys is celebrating its 25th birthday.
Morigenos team has been working closely with Tethys and its members over the past years, which is always a great pleasure. In fact, in a way, Tethys is guilty of inspiring something that later became Morigenos, as the founder of Morigenos started his cetacean work with Tethys. So thanks for that and best wishes from Morigenos!

A few thoughts from Giuseppe Notarbartolo di Sciara, president and founder of Tethys: Tethys' 25th birthday
