Z njim boste v kratkem času naredili veliko razliko. Opis postopka in naši podatki so dostopni tukaj

Pomagajte ohraniti delfine v slovenskem morju! Povejte svojim znancem in prijateljem, kako so lahko dobrodelni.

Najlepša hvala za vaš prispevek!

Krilca (Wings) spreading happiness for 5 years

Krilca (Wings), gifts with magical powers, are celebrating 5 years today. With Krilca anyone can help change the world for the better. Beautiful and useful at the same time, even tough they can’t be touched or held. With them, you don’t make another ordinary purchase, but do a truly good deed. Money doesn’t go to the factory, but to someone in need. Purchase also doesn’t strain the environment, but makes a child, a dolphin or the community happy. Wings are therefore also excellent business gifts, since one can give an original and responsible gift to business partners.

Umanotera, Slovenian foundation for sustainable development, ensures that the gift goes to the right hands. Partner organizations of Krilca receive the money to carry out their specified projects. Moreover, they prepare regular reports about the funds used, which can be found at www.krilca.si. Morigenos is one of the proud partners of Krilca.

It is the right time of the year to become a part of Krilca and give a magical gift. Some gifts will travel far, others will stay in Slovenia. Certain gifts will bring prosperity to people, others will help animals. In any case, your move will bring a lot of happiness.

Nekatera darila bodo potovala daleč, nekatera v Slovenijo. Zaradi nekaterih bodo bolje zaživeli ljudje, zaradi drugih se bo lepše godilo živalim. V vsakem primeru bo vaša poteza povzročila eno samo veselje.

Morigenos president receives a prestigious international award

We are proud to announce that Tilen Genov, the founder and president of Morigenos, recently received a prestigious international award for his efforts in dolphin conservation in Slovenia. The award, known as the Alfred Toepfer Natural Heritage Scholarship, is awarded by EUROPARC Federation (International Federation of Protected Areas in Europe) and the Alfred Toepfer Foundation. Out of 43 candidates, the award was given to three young European conservationists, based on their existing achievements and proposed future work in the field of nature conservation. Apart from Tilen, the award was received by two young scientists from Belgium and Hungary. The scholarship enables the winners to undertake study visits to protected areas and conservation organizations in other European countries, in order to translate the gained knowledge into conservation practice within their respective countries. The award ceremony was held last Thursday, 25th October 2012, at the EUROPARC 2012 conference in Belgium. The event also marked the 20th anniversary of the European network of protected areas, called Natura 2000.

Morigenos team is very proud of Tilen and congratulates him for this achievement.

Common dolphin in Piran Bay

The Morigenos team had another unusual sighting last night. While returning from fieldwork we encountered a short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis), right in front of the Piran harbour. As mentioned in one of our recent posts, this species has become very rare (despite its name) in the Adriatic Sea in the last thirty years. The dolphin appeared in good condition and was very playful, approaching our boat on several occasions. Based on the natural marks on its dorsal fin we quickly realised that this is not the female we monitored in 2010 and 2011. Instead, it is another dolphin that was initially sighted on the Italian side of the Gulf of Trieste last month. Even though such sightings of single animals do not indicate a return of the species to the Adriatic, we all still wish this was the case. If you happen to spot any dolphins in the northern Adriatic, please report your sightings to +38631771077 or morigenos(at)morigenos.org. Navadni delfin v Piranskem zalivu

Slovenian and Italian researchers document the longest movement ever recorded in a common dolphin

Morigenos researchers and their Italian colleagues have documented the longest movement ever recorded in the short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis). A female dolphin swam from Greece to the Gulf of Trieste, travelling more than 1000 km! Even though dolphins are known to be very mobile animals, this is the longest movement ever documented in this species, worldwide.

The study was recently published in the scientific journal Marine Biodiversity Records and involved researchers from Morigenos, Tethys Research Institute, Dolphin Biology & Conservation, and the Miramare marine reserve.

Morigenos researchers mostly study bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), the only regular dolphin species in the northern Adriatic. But in 2010, in collaboration with colleagues from Miramare reserve, they recorded a female short-beaked common dolphin with her calf in the Gulf of Trieste. Seeing a common dolphin was surprising in its own right, as this species has virtually disappeared from the Adriatic Sea. But an even greater surprise came when researchers discovered that this dolphin had already been seen in Greek waters in 2008. A method called photo-identification was helpful here – individual dolphins can be identified by natural marks on their dorsal fins. Morigenos researchers photographed the dolphin and sent the photos to their colleagues at Tethys Research Institute, which study common dolphins in Greece. It turned out they already knew this particular dolphin.

Morigenos and Miramare researchers monitored the dolphin since then. She spent most of her time in the port of Monfalcone. The calf disappeared in the beginning of 2011. After that the female was often seen around Trieste until September 2011, when she disappeared as well.

The short-beaked common dolphin has been considered extirpated in the Adriatic Sea in the last 30 years, despite being common in the past. The most likely causes are deliberate killing in the previous century, as well as the ecosystem changes resulting from pollution and overfishing. The common dolphin has also became rare in other parts of the Mediterranean, except in the Alboran Sea. The nearest population to the Adriatic Sea is found in the Ionian Sea off the coasts of Greece.

With a single case being reported here, these findings about the long-distance movement cannot necessarily be generalised to the entire species. Unfortunately, this also does not mean the common dolphin is returning to the Adriatic. Still, this study shows the effectiveness of photo-identification in common dolphin research, and shows that international collaboration is vital to the study, monitoring and conservation of mobile marine species.

The scientific paper can be viewed here:

Genov, T., Bearzi, G., Bonizzoni, S. & Tempesta, M. 2012. Long-distance movement of a lone short-beaked common dolphin Delphinus delphis in the central Mediterranean Sea. Marine Biodiversity Records, 5 , e9 doi:10.1017/S1755267211001163.

Raziskovalci društva Morigenos in rezervata Miramare so delfinko opazovali in spremljali vse odtlej.

Two striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) in Portorož, Slovenia

Yesterday (5th June 2012) Morigenos received several reports of two dolphins sighted along the main beach and piers in Portorož, Slovenia. We responded and managed to identify the two animals as striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), which appeared in good condition. Examination of photographs revealed that these two dolphins have recently been sighted in a nearby Italian port of Grignano. As we reported in the scientific literature a few years ago, this species is occasional in this part of the Adriatic Sea (unlike the bottlenose dolphin, which is regular). If you spot any dolphins in Slovenian waters during the following days, or if you have spotted them recently, please report it at +386 31 77 10 77. This helps us monitor the occurrence of these animals in our waters. If you have any photos or video, we would also be very interested.

Dva navadna progasta delfina (Stenella coeruleoalba) v Portorožu
