Ana Hace of Morigenos is currently in Ligurian Sea, participating in whale and dolphin research onboard the research ship of Tethys Research Institute. As part of a collaboration between Morigenos and Tethys, Ana is gaining new knowledge and experience from Tethys experts, while helping out in fieldwork. Ana has already reported that the first week of the research season was very successful, as they encountered several groups of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), a few sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and even a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus). Apart from the "classical" stuff, which Ana already knows from the Slovenian Dolphin Project, she learned many new things, including tracking of sperm whales with a hydrophone (underwater microphone). She had a chance to listen to these gentle giants vocalizing. You can read the reports of Ana and other project participants at Tethys Blog.
Tethys is one of the first organizations in the Mediterranean that actively and systematically started whale and dolphin research. They successfully transfered their passion onto some of today's Morigenos team members.
