A Net Effect Clean-up of Ghost Gear at the Bay of Koper

On the World Oceans Day, Morigenos will join a worldwide initiative Net Effect organized by World Cetacean Alliance in conjunction with the World Animal Protection and Global Ghost Gear Initiative. From 6th to 8th of June 2015 clean-ups will be organized on the shores around the world. Their purpose is to raise awareness on the problem of marine litter, especially disused fishing gear (nets, lines, traps). Every year around 640,000 tonnes of used fishing gear is dumped into the sea. For marine animals, which get caught in it, it is usually fatal.

In Slovenia, we will highlight the problem of marine litter on Saturday, 6th of June 2015, with a clean-up at the Bay of Koper. You are welcome to join us!

We will gather at 10:00 a.m. in Koper in the parking lot in front of the outdoor swimming pool in Žusterna. Clean-up will last for two hours. We recommend good footwear and sun protection.

Morigenos will provide trash bags and gloves. Each participant will get a Morigenos T-shirt as a gift.

All collected marine litter will be handed over to authorised institutions. Gathered data and fishing gear we be given to the Institute for Water of the Republic of Slovenia, who is tackling the problem of marine litter within the project DeFishGear.

The clean-up is partially financed by the Municipality of Koper.

You can sign up for the clean-up via e-mail at projekti.morigenos@gmail.com or by phone (call or SMS) +00 386 40 470 213.
