Morigenos and giants of the deep sea in Arboretum Park

In mid-May, the Slovenian horticultural park Arboretum Volčji Potok built a unique exhibition "Giants of the deep sea", where you can see more than 10 life-size whale statues – the longest of them measuring almost 25 meters. Morigenos also took park in the preparation of this exhibition. We provided information and interesting facts about each exhibited species that you can find on the information boards besides the sculptures.

In addition, Morigenos will be part of the accompanying program in the park until the autumn interacting with visitors at our creative workshops for children about the sea and dolphins as well as lectures on dolphins along the Slovenian Coast. Children can join us at our creative workshop this weekend, June 24 and 25, from 15 pm to 19 pm in the Indonesian pavilion, right next to the exhibition of marine giants.

Details about our events, which will be free of charge for all park visitors, are available at the Arboretum Park Event Calendar.

Welcome!

The exhibition features life-size sculptures of a fin whale, humpback whale, sperm whale, bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin, common dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, pilot whale, orca and false orca, and even a whale's heart, brain and caudal fins. The exhibition was made entirely in the Arboretum, led by sculptor Edina-Eda Šćuka.

Morigenos in velikani morskih globin v Arboretumu

New generations of marine researchers

In Morigenos, we especially like working with primary and secondary schools, as we wish to pass our knowledge and experience from the world of dolphins on to the new generations, introduce them to the work of marine researchers and encourage them to protect the marine environment.

In the spring and summer months, we are visited by many school groups from all over Slovenia and abroad. Students are always very enthusiastic to learn about our work through our given lectures on dolphins along the Slovenian coast and are keen to try and search for dolphins themselves from our land observation point and from the boat trip where they are taken to be able to experience how it feels like to be a dolphin explorer.

One such group were the students from Elementary School Bled, who spent an interesting afternoon with us yesterday. It was a pleasure to have them with us!

Nove generacije morskih raziskovalcev

Working together towards marine biodiversity conservation

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has designated the 5th of June as the World Environment Day, to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. At Morigenos, we celebrated the occasion one day after the actual World Environment Day, but we did it in good company. Organized by the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and accompanied by Landscape Park Strunjan, we headed out to sea to commemorate this day and highlight the importance of marine biodiversity conservation. At sea, we met with representatives of other institutions that deal with marine research and conservation one way or another: Slovenian Maritime Administration, marine fisheries inspector, maritime police, and the Marine Biology Station Piran accompanied by students of the programme Biodiversity from the University of Primorska on their fieldwork. We were also accompanied by several crews of Slovenian national media, which will disseminate this information through television and newspapers. Despite tricky weather conditions we were lucky to encounter dolphins on this day. We saw Morigenos, Daphne and Capri, all well known to us and studied for several years. Daphne and Morigenos are two of the ten dolphins that can be adopted under our Adopt a dolphin programme. By adopting one of our dolphins you can support the research and conservation of these important marine mammals in Slovenia and the northern Adriatic Sea. Dolphin adoption is a great way to help protect our marine environment and thus contribute to the overall objectives of the UNEP World Environment Day.

Tokrat so bili z nami Morigenos, Daphne in Capri. Vse tri delfine v društvu poznamo in spremljamo že vrsto let.

Even the youngest helping in dolphin conservation

Pupils of the Waldorf School Gorenjska collected donations from their little pockets and adopted our dolphin named Morigenos. They also delighted us with a bunch of pretty drawings and wished us many beautiful research days. Thank you, children, and their teacher!

You can also adopt a dolphin from Slovenia and thus support the conservation and research of these wonderful creatures in the northern Adriatic.

Hvala vam, otroci, in vaši učiteljici!
