Fin whale in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History

On Thursday, 15th September 2011, Morigenos team attended the official opening of the exhibition titled "The mysterious death of young Leonora", where a skeleton of a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) was displayed. In spring 2003, a dead female fin whale was found floating in Piran Bay. The skeleton was acquired by the Slovenian Museum of Natural History. Their experts turned 10 tonnes of decomposing carcass into a beautiful white skeleton that is now displayed in one of the museum's halls. This is the largest exhibit ever acquired by this museum in its 190 years of history. It was given a name Leonora.

The exhibition, with its video footage, audio effects, interactive presentations, diverse images and interesting texts, takes the visitors through marine depths, where they can learn all about who Leonora was, where she came from, who are her relatives and what were her life habits. Even though the cause of death of young Leonora remains a mystery, the exhibition draws attention to the threats affecting whales and are mostly caused by human activities.

We are proud to invite you to have a look, because Morigenos had an important role in the making of the exhibition. We contributed several photographs and provided information, while Morigenos president Tilen Genov is one of the authors of the new educational booklet "Fin whale in the Slovenian Museum of Natural History".

The exhibition will be open from 16th September 2011 to 16th of September 2012, every day between 10:00 and 18:00, during Tuesdays also untill 20:00. Each first Sunday of the month the entry is free.

Brazdasti kit v Prirodoslovnem muzeju Slovenije
